The Himalayan state of Uttarakhand is vulnerable to multiple natural hazards of which flood and flash flood are important ones. Floods caused by intense rainfall events as also by the breach of temporary lakes formed by landslides and glacial moraine, are common in Uttarakhand. These have adverse impact on the life support strategy of the people of the state.The Government of Uttarakhand realized the critical nature of the issue and felt an urgent need to prepare and implement preventive control measures. Thus, the project called “River Morphological Analysis and Design of River Training and Bank Protection Works in Uttarakhand State” is being undertaken with an ultimate goal of obtaining a sound and dependable model and a supporting state–centralized information system, which is streamlined, efficient, easily updatable, and accessible.

This would help in better anticipation of the responses of the river to any catastrophic events, and encroachment in its flood plain and more so by the erection of man-made structures in the flood plain. This would ensure timely corrective action so as to minimize future devastation.
