Tyrannosaurus rex , from the Latinized Greek tyrannus em> 'tyrant' and saurus 'lizard', and the Latin rex , 'king') is the known species that lived at the end of Cretaceous period, approximately between 68 and 66 million years ago in the Maastrichtian, in what is now North America. Commonly abbreviated as T. rex , and Castilianized as Tyrannosaurus is a common figure in popular culture. It was one of the last non-avian dinosaurs that existed before the mass extinction of the Cretaceous-Tertiary.

Like other tyrannosaurs, T. rex was a bipedal carnivore with a huge skull balanced by a long, heavy tail. In relation to their long and powerful hind limbs, the upper members of Tyrannosaurus were small, but surprisingly strong for their size, and ended in two clawed fingers. Although other theropods rival or exceed Tyrannosaurus rex in size, it is still the largest known tyrannosaurid and one of the largest known predators on Earth, measuring up to 12.3 meters long, 4 meters high up to the hips, and with estimated weights between 6 to 8 tons.
