The Varanasi traffic police officer now be equipped with handheld devices to streamline the entire challan system from 11 Oct 2018. On providing a vehicle's registration number to the device, the device would instantly provides details of the pending e-challan amounts against it. Traffic police officers would also be able to print e-challans in English language on-the-spot and also forward it to courts.

The device would be connected to a central database using GPRS (3G) through which it would be able to search or access data on the basis of the vehicle number, name of the driver, parentage, and driver's license details. Also, using this device, the traffic police will be able to know the status of the vehicle - whether it is stolen, involved in crime or otherwise, previous history of the vehicle or the driver in accident, previous prosecution history of the vehicle, pending notices of the vehicle.
