"My Fuel Efficiency" is designed to help drivers estimate and track their vehicle's fuel efficiency over time. This information can then help car owners identify mechanical, fuel and driver-related causes of reduced fuel efficiency.
By entering trip odometer readings, fuel purchase volumes and prices, and driving conditions, users will create a history of estimated fuel efficiency readings. This information can help drivers monitor vehicle performance and personal driving behaviors - leading to better fuel economy and cost savings.
Mechanical / Fuel Related Causes of Reduced Fuel Efficiency:
Weight - heavier loads cause more fuel consumption. Remove any unneeded objects / materials from your vehicle. A clean car is also nicer to drive! Take your cargo carriers off your car when you don't need them to reduce wind drag, and increase efficiency!
Tires - are your tires over-inflated, under-inflated, improperly aligned, or worn? Improper tire inflation and installation can impact fuel economy - not to mention safety!
Poorly Tuned Engine - be honest, when is the last time you had your car in for an engine tune-up? Installing a clean air-filter is probably something you can do yourself! Other factors (like the car's oxygen sensors, fuel injectors, spark plugs) are better left to your professional mechanic - visit regularly.
Brakes - brake drag, increasing friction, will make your car engine work harder, reducing fuel efficiency.
Gasoline Quality - keep track of where you purchase your fuel. Do different suppliers result in better fuel efficiency? Also, many suppliers add ethanol to help in reducing pollution. However, using gasoline with 10% ethanol decreases fuel economy by 3%–4%.
Air Conditioning - how hot out is it? Can you just open a window?
Driving Behaviours Resulting in Reduced Fuel Efficiency:
Driving Speed - driving at high speeds will result in less fuel efficiency (because of the increased wind resistance). Avoid speeding, for safety reasons, but know that you are also saving gas. (You can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying an additional $0.17 per gallon for gas. *) Use Cruise Control to improve your efficiency.
Excessive Idling - if you have to stop for more than 30 seconds, turn off your engine. You will save gas, and help keep our air clean! Turn off your engine when your vehicle is parked. It only takes about 10 seconds worth of fuel to restart your vehicle. *
Four-Wheel Drive - if you can, turn this off when you don't need it!
Aggressive Driving - rapid acceleration consumes a lot of fuel. Some studies show that aggressive driving can reduce fuel efficiency by 15% to 30%!
Stop-and-Go Traffic - negatively impacts fuel efficiency - by as much as 40%. Try taking the slower moving side streets. Perhaps it will take just as long as waiting in the traffic, but your fuel efficiency (and sanity) with be preserved!
Manual Transmission - driving a manual transmission car incorrectly (wrong gearing) will waste fuel. Listen to the engine RPM, pay attention to your gearing habits, and track your fuel efficiency. Adjust your driving habits accordingly.
Road Conditions:
Hilly / Mountainous Roads - you will burn more gas as your car works up and down the hills. Try coasting on the downward side - take your foot off the gas.
Cold Weather - your engine doesn't operate optimally until it is warmed up. This takes longer on cold days. However, the misconception is that this time is a few minutes. Often times all you need is 30 seconds to a minute (check your manual). Sitting there letting the engine run just wastes gas. This excessive idling adds up over the season and can really lower your gas mileage
