Chrysogonum Pierre

This eastern US native should be a staple in all gardens...large or small. Native in dry open shade, Chrysogonum virginianum makes a truly superb garden plant. The patches of 6" tall rosettes burst forth in spring to form 1' wide clumps of fuzzy thumb-shaped green leaves and are topped, starting in May (NC), with dozens of 1", yellow-petal, daisy-like flowers. Chrysogonum 'Pierre' was selected as a very flat growing, long-flowering form which, in cool weather, can remain in flower through the summer (but not in the South). It was given to Pierre Bennerup, the intrepid owner of Sunny Border Nursery, by the late John Gallagher of CT, who we think got it from the late Dr. Edgar T. Wherry.

Soft green, clump-forming foliage hugs the ground and becomes covered with long-blooming, star-shaped, golden flowers. Foliage can remain evergreen in mild winters. Chrysogonum Pierre will brighten a shady spot when combined with small trees and ferns.

Chrysogonum General Information

Chrysogonum is a low-growing, mat-forming plant, similar in structure to Ajuga. Excellent in terms of spread and the extent to which it covers itself with flowers, it creates a delightful ground cover or edging in the perennial border

Chrysogonum Plant Care

Likes a moist rich soil. No rampant spreading, just consistent even growth. Flowers continuously - no deadheading needed. Easily divided in late spring. Tolerates limited foot traffic. Blooms best in cooler situations.
